If your home has exterior french doors leading to your deck, add a coat of stain and polyurethane to their surface to improve their appearance and to protect the wood that they are made out of. The following steps will teach you how to successfully complete this project.

Prepare The Door Panels
Remove the hinge pins that are holding the door panels in place with a screwdriver and a hammer. To do this, place the tip of the screwdriver under the edge of each pin. Tap them several times with the hammer until they slide upwards and out of the hinges. Place a tarp on the ground and set up a couple sawhorses on top of it. Carefully lay the door panels across them. Remove hardware from the panels with a screwdriver and place painters tape around the glass panes on each door to protect them from the wood stain and polyurethane.
Sand The Door Panels And Apply The Stain
Use a hand sander and fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand the door panels. Move the sander with the grain of the wood. Wipe the surface of each panel off with a tack cloth. This type of cloth has a sticky surface that will pick up dust that was left behind from the sanding process. Wood stain can discolor your skin, so put on a pair of rubber gloves before opening it. Dip a lint free cloth into the stain and apply it evenly to each door panel.
Wait several hours for the stain to dry. The actual time that it will take to dry will depend upon the shade that you have chosen and the weather conditions. Lightly sand the stained door panels and wipe them off with a lint free cloth before applying a second coat of stain to each panel.
Apply The Polyurethane And Replace The Hinge Pins
Dip a lint free cloth into the exterior polyurethane and apply it evenly over the stained surfaces. The polyurethane will give the door panels a glossy appearance and will protect the wood from moisture and sunlight. After the polyurethane has dried, reattach the hardware and peel off the painters tape. Line up each panel and install the hinge pins. The
